I can’t conjure up the profound words my friend Zach can when introducing an mp3, but I can tell you that when this track appears in your playlist, you have been Visited.
Download “Angels” by Albert Ayler by clicking here. Tell me what you think after you’ve listened to it. This is a live version, btw.
edit: I just realized no one would download this as it was introduced, except maybe a couple people I know IRL. So, I’ll be a bit more descriptive. It is a Jazz song. No singing. Live in Greewich village 1969. It’s pretty straight-ahead for my tastes, but if you think Jazz should be “smooth” and “calming” it might irritate.
I’m on a kick now. Sorry.
One time I was talking to Nedelle and as we were talking I realized that my view of ’50’s america had totally shifted. I had always found the typical ’50’s diner picture of the decade particulaly loathsome and thought to myself of all the decades, that was one into which I was glad I was not born. But, as we spoke I realized that it would have been fucking awesome. I said as much and we had one of those “oh my god you like phlinkrumph bellitart, too!!” moments. We agreed that all the shittyness would be tolerable thanks to the music and literature and blossoming counter-culture.
The ’50’s were capped-off by a 1959 album by Ornette Coleman, called “The Shape of Jazz to Come”. The first track on that album is what I hear when I hear the word “Jazz”. It is called “Lonely Woman” and you can click here to download it.
